Welcome to the Information Page on the SPICES research study.

(The full title is: ‘Studying Power in Conversations After Self-Harm: A Critical Realist Understanding of Embodied Power in Community Mental Health’, but SPICES is a little easier to remember!).

This research is part of Toni King’s PhD study at the University of Brighton. She is also a Consultant Occupational Therapist and works in mental health services in Portsmouth.

Clare Ockwell and Dan Elton have been employed as Lived Experience Research Advisors throughout much of this research.

Clare and Dan bring their experience of living with mental health issues to this study and we have drawn on our strengths and experiences to design, deliver and analyse this PhD from multiple perspectives. This is called co-production. It has been invaluable and we are proud of our work together.

An outline of the study is captured in the recruitment poster at the bottom of this page and a timeline below shows the progress made.

Progress so far

Whilst the findings of the research are not yet finalised, there has been quite a lot of interest in HOW we are working – the co-production of our work.

Therefore, we share example tools for your information and use with completed and upcoming presentations so that you can join us.
